Program

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Arrival in Riga. Optional transfer to the hotel. Check-in at the hotel.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 2: MANGALSALA – JAUNCIEMS

Your journey around Riga begins with a visit to Mangalsala Breakwater, a scenic spot where the Daugava River slowly flows into the sea. If you’re lucky, you might even see large ships passing by. Later, the route follows the white sand coastline for a couple of kilometres before turning into pine forest, offering greenery and fresh air in every season. Along the way, you will see the Werewolf Pine and old trenches built by the German army in 1944 along the Langa River. The hike ends at Jaunciema Beach on the shore of Lake Kisezers, surrounded by sea-buckthorn bushes.

Hiking distance: 19,5 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 3: JAUNCIEMS – UPESKALNI

The first part of the route zigzags through pine forests until it reaches the Bukulti Nature Trail, showcasing a small black alder bog typical of riverbanks. Later, you will follow the Jugla Canal until reaching Priedaine, known for its fancy villas from the 1990s and 2000s. Along the way, you will have a chance to take a selfie with the iconic white RIGA letters, a fine example of 1980s design. The route then continues along the shore of Lake Jugla, offering a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Hiking distance: 23,1 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 4: UPESKALNI – GETLINI

The day begins with exploring the surroundings of Lake Jugla – pine forests, the former Jugla Papermill settlement, and the Jugla and Breksi manors, once splendid buildings now slowly dissolving into time and history. The next section is probably the most urban part of the entire expedition around Riga, following Lubanas Street until reaching Dreilini Forest. However, the forest is not an idyllic patch of nature within the city – it hides the horrors of Nazi terror, as around 13 000 people were killed here during the 1940s. The route continues through industrial areas and finishes next to the impressive Getlini garbage hill.

Hiking distance: 19,5 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 5: GETLINI – KENGARAGS

This is undoubtedly the most colourful part of the hike around Riga. A large stretch of the route meanders through Darzini, where quirky garden huts with unusual decorations stand alongside elegant villas with balconies overlooking the Daugava River. A bridge will lead you to the countryside atmosphere of Zirnu Island, where it is hard to believe that you are still within Riga city limits. Along the way, you will visit another site connected to Nazi atrocities – the Rumbula Memorial, marking the place where more than 25 000 Jews were killed. To celebrate life, you might be lucky enough to try the famous chebureki sold right by the roadside. The final part of the hike follows the Kengarags Promenade, where Mazjumprava Manor and a birdwatching tower await.

Hiking distance: 19,7 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 6: KENGARAGS – MEDEMCIEMS

You will begin the day by following the Kengarags Promenade between the Daugava River and Soviet-era apartment blocks. It is more exciting than it sounds, especially since the promenade is enriched with artworks. Before crossing the river, take a look at Kengarags Market and the former factory complex nearby. After the bridge, you will see 134 metres of street art dedicated to the famous Latvian ice cream brand “Pols” and its 55th anniversary. Soon after comes another chance to take a selfie with the RIGA letters. The route then reaches Medema Bog and follows the old peat railway line leading slightly outside Riga towards Balozi.

Hiking distance: 20,2 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 7: MEDEMCIEMS – BEBERBEKI

A tiny path through a marsh Labrador tea-covered forest leads to Lake Stunisi. Later, you will get a glimpse into everyday life in Tiraine and along the border between Riga and Marupe. A beautiful detour introduces the Marupite River, a small stream flowing through Riga and known for several open-air sculpture parks along its banks. For a sweet treat, stop by a café at the furthest point of the detour. Afterwards, the route takes on a more industrial and urban feel until reaching Riga Airport and following its perimeter fence. Right at the end of the hike comes a third opportunity to take a selfie with the RIGA letters.

Hiking distance: 24,5 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 8: BEBERBEKI – BOLDERAJA

Pine forests create a striking contrast with Soviet apartment blocks located only a few hundred metres away, later replaced by recently built residential houses. Briefly overlapping with the Coastal Trail and Forest Trail, the route passes through the Bulli Dunes. gently rolling hills hidden among pine trees, and continues up to the Lielupe White Dune, which offers magnificent views over the Lielupe River. Later, you will descend the dune and see it from below. The route continues along the Bullupe River, first on a country road and then along the Bolderaja Promenade. The hike ends with a beautiful 19th-century wooden church and views towards Love Island.

Hiking distance: 22,9 km.

Overnight in Riga

DAY 9: BOLDERAJA – DAUGAVGRIVA

The first part of the hike passes through the Daugavgriva neighbourhood before diving into a garden-house colony full of unexpected surprises and creative solutions. Later, while following the banks of the Bullupe River, it may feel as though Riga and all city noise have been left far behind – lush greenery, fishermen’s boats, and wooden docks make the area resemble a tiny village rather than a capital city. One of the trail’s most beautiful surprises is the Pauls Jaunzems Sculpture Park located directly on the shore of the Bullupe. A narrow path along the Lielupe River leads to the place where the river meets the sea. From there, endless white sand beaches guide you towards the Daugavgriva Breakwater at the very end of the route.

Hiking distance: 24,4 km.

My friend and I had an unforgettable tour through the beautiful Baltic countries - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The trip was just what we’d asked for - at an easy pace with some really great and knowledgeable guides, but with free time to explore on our own as well. We were well looked after from first to last and will certainly be thinking about returning to these wonderful countries.

I booked the Trakai snowshoeing tour. This company did a great job communicating with me leading up to the tour date. Unfortunately there wasn't enough snow for snowshoeing so they arranged a hike instead. Tomas was a great guide. He provided a lot of interesting information during both the walk/hike and the tour of Trakai. He was also so kind as to bring tea (which was great on such a cold day) and Šakotis (very delicious), which we enjoyed after walking through the trails at Varnikai Forest. If I am in the Baltic region again, I would definitely consider another tour with Baltic Nature Travel. Thanks for a great time!

Baltic Nature Travel (BNT) did an outstanding job organizing our 17 day self-driving tour through Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania in Sept. 2025. Every detail was carefully planned and implemented - transportation from & to the airport and ferry; rental car delivered to our hotel; personal guides in the capital cities. The hotels were in excellent locations and often family owned, with great breakfasts included. The trip was designed so that we spent two nights at several places, which made pace of our trip just right. Two hotel had saunas and pools - a good respite. Our trip included urban and rural experiences, lots of opportunity for walking and exploring. As American visitors, we appreciated the reception we received from local residents and the fluent English spoken by most. BNT has our very highest recommendation.

We had booked the Best of Ķemeri National Park tour. We had an amazing day together with Rolands. He picked us up right on schedule, and in the car his enthusiasm for the tour was immediately apparent! He told us all about the day, about what we could expect. The tour exceeded all our expectations, it was truly beautiful. Rolands was very informative, told us all about the area, the history, the nature. Not only did we enjoy the hiking and breathing in the fresh air, we also learned some very interesting things! Rolands was very friendly and talkative and we could ask all the questions we want, even about the Latvian language and traditions. He was also very helpfull, when my wife had trouble with some paths, he helped her. Even when she stubbed her toe, it didn't take any joy out of the day.

Our family had the privilege of working with Valdis and his company Baltic Nature Travel, both as our travel planner and guide for what became the most significant, symbolic, and memorable trip of our lives - a family heritage discovery journey through Latvia. Valdis brought Latvia to life for our family in a way we will never forget. From the very beginning, he thoughtfully prepared an itinerary that balanced cultural highlights with deeply personal experiences. He went out of his way to make phone calls and track down historical places in the countryside - sites that were far off the beaten path - so we could walk the same roads our ancestors once did. Because of his dedication, we were able to visit the towns our relatives grew up in, stand in the schools they attended, and step into the very churches where they were married. These moments were profoundly moving and would not have been possible without his diligence and care. Beyond the heritage aspect, Valdis ensured that every detail of our journey was seamless. He made restaurant reservations, arranged impeccable hotel accommodations, comfortable transport, and found us the most wonderful driver, Aldis, whose skill, kindness, and courtesy elevated the entire experience. Both Valdis and Aldis were not only professional, conscientious and gracious at every turn, but they quickly became trusted companions - friends we now consider part of our extended family. We could not recommend Valdis and Baltic Nature Travel more highly. From the first time we were in contact, until our trip was over, Valdis truly took care of us. For anyone seeking assistance or guidance in their travels to Latvia or across the Baltic States, I would choose Valdis a hundred times over. His passion, knowledge and personal touch transformed our trip into something truly unforgettable. -Julie Birznieks

I would highly recommend Valdis and Baltic Nature Travel for a trip to Estonia and Helsinki. I worked with Valdis over a few weeks to plan a custom trip for my family - including a toddler and our parents. He was very easy to communicate with and helped me plan the perfect trip for 12 days - the quality of the guides was fantastic and the itinerary was well planned for self drive. We absolutely loved Estonia and everything we were able to see and on our grand adventure!
