Program

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TALLINN

Welcome to the capital of Estonia! Tallinn has one of the region’s best-preserved medieval centers, but there is also a modern edge that you can discover in its lively dining and nightlife scenes. Its waterfront promenades and nearby beaches offer great views of the city and coast and are perfect spots for a romantic stroll at any time of year.

DAY 2: TALLINN

In the morning you will go on a guided walking tour of Tallinn to explore a well-preserved medieval center known as the Old Town. You will see many historic sites, for example, Toompea Castle, a stately baroque castle which today houses the Parliament of Estonia; the 13th century Dome Church; the Russian Revival Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. At the end of the tour you will enter Great Guild Hall, which was a guild for merchants in the 14th century and is now the Estonian History Museum.

DAY 3: TALLINN – LAHEMAA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast at your hotel, you will transfer to Lahemaa National Park, a scenic coastline northeast which is considered one of the last unspoiled regions of the Baltic Coast. Within Lahemaa National Park, you will visit Käsmu village, which sits on a bog with many lakes and streams. You will also stop at fishermen’s villages and historic manor estates, including Palmse Manor. This manor estate dates to the early 16th century and is considered one of the country’s most impressive examples of Baroque architecture. Besides the main house, the expansive grounds feature a greenhouse, hedgerows, gardens and a park with gazebos and a bathhouse overlooking a pond.

DAY 4: LAHEMAA NATIONAL PARK – LAKE PEIPUS – TARTU

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, and afterward, you will visit the shores of Lake Peipus. It is the fifth-largest lake in Europe and also the largest trans-boundary lake on the continent, as it shares borders with both Estonia and Russia. Beyond its natural beauty, this area has its own cultural and religious legacy. The Estonian side of the lake is home to one of the biggest Russian Orthodox Old Believers communities in Europe. Next you will transfer to Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city.

You will go on the guided walking tour and indulge in Tartu’s young, bohemian atmosphere. After all, this city is home to Tartu University, which was established in 1632 and is the national university. The tour begins in Town Hall Square with a visit to the statue of Kissing Students. Nearby you will find St. John’s Church with its many terracotta sculptures, and the university.

DAY 5: TARTU

Today you will join a guided tour of the Estonian National Museum. Founded in 1909, this museum preserves Estonian national heritage. It traces the cultural history of the region’s inhabitants dating as far back as the Ice Age and is home to an impressive collection of artefacts contributing to better understanding of cultural development until World War II and after. The rest of the day is on your own leisure to enjoy Tartu.

DAY 6: TARTU – VILJANDI – PARNU

In the morning, you will continue an hour west from Tartu to the town of Viljandi, to join a guided walking tour. Viljandi has a unique history, as it became part of the German Hanseatic League in the early 14th century. Today it is a charming town nestled in the woods and featuring well-preserved medieval buildings. These include the iconic St. John’s Church, a 17th-century Baptist church with a tall steeple and long spire.

In the afternoon you will arrive in Parnu, the fourth-largest city in Estonia located in the west coast. This is a popular summertime retreat for Estonians with its long, sandy beach and resort-like accommodations. You will go on a guided walking tour of Parnu downtown to get to know its 19th-century timber villas and the eclectic mix of old and new architecture, as well as beautiful parks filled with trees, walking paths and fountains. The highlight of the city is, of course, Parnu Beach, where you can relax for the remainder of the day.

DAY 7: PARNU – HAPSALU – TALLINN

After breakfast, you will visit another seaside resort town of Haapsalu, which is known for its narrow streets, romantic wooden houses and seaside promenade. Visit the Haapsalu Castle Museum, which was founded in the middle of the 13th century and was used until the end of the 17th century. After, you will continue to Tallinn.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE

After breakfast, at the appropriate time, you will transfer to the airport for your flight home. This concludes your grand Baltic adventure. Until next time!

Valdis is an experienced guide, a local from Riga. He has a wealth of knowledge and is always able to tell you interesting history along the way. The route plan of the hiking is also reasonable. In autumn, the fallen leaves near Sigulda are also very beautiful. If you are planning to do an outdoor hike in Latvia too, then don't hesitate to join a walking group organized by Valdis.

I enjoyed I enjoyed my tour of Cesis: Medieval Heritage and Natural Treasures! I loved being able to do a little of many things. Exploring the old city, touring a medieval castle, and a walk through a national park. The scenery was amazing and my guide was knowledgeable and helpful! As a single female, I felt safe the entire time and and would recommend to others!

We have enjoyed 2 days with Valdis who has shown us around Riga Old Town and a tour out to Sigulda. A very friendly tour guide who tailored the days to our needs with no fuss. Valdis is easy to get along , has a good sense of humour and is extremely knowledgeable. Fortunately for us Valdis is also very fluent in English. I can highly recommend him as a tour guide.

We have just spent 9 days travelling through the Baltic countries with Valdis as our guide. Although the itinerary and accommodation had been pre-arranged Valdis supported our trip brilliantly, bringing to life the individual countries with city walking tours, nature trails and visits to other sites. He is great fun, extremely knowledgable and became an integral part of our small group. His contribution to our holiday played a key part in making it a great and enjoyable experience (and he recommends good places to eat!)
